“Thinking” Is More Than One Ability

People use the word thinking for solving problems, planning, comparing choices, remembering, imagining, and understanding. So a better question is often: what kind of thinking are we talking about?

AI Can Reason and Plan

Modern AI can compare choices, solve some multi-step problems, make plans, use tools, and sometimes review its own work. Those are behaviors we often associate with thinking.

PROBLEM → BREAK INTO PARTS → COMPARE → ACT → CHECK → ANSWER

But AI Reasoning Is Uneven

An AI can solve a difficult problem and then fail on something that seems easy. Success on one benchmark does not mean the system has every ability a human has.

Intelligent behavior ≠ perfect intelligence

Intelligence and Consciousness Are Different

Intelligence usually describes abilities such as learning, reasoning, planning, and adapting. Consciousness usually refers to having an inner experience—such as experiencing pain, seeing red, or being aware that you exist.

A system can show intelligent behavior without proving that it has a human-like inner experience.

Human-Like Language Is Not Proof

An AI can generate “I feel happy” because it has learned how that sentence is used. The sentence alone does not prove the system experiences happiness.

What a system can do and what, if anything, it experiences are different questions.

A Better Set of Questions

Can AI reason? — Sometimes, often impressively.
Can AI plan? — Yes, in many situations.
Can AI make mistakes? — Absolutely.
Can AI use tools? — Yes, when connected to them.
Does current AI have human-like inner experience? — Not established.
